Millions of Fish Now Thrive in China’s Desert After Aquaculture Breakthrough
Xinjiang, China — In a remarkable development, millions of fish are now living and thriving in desert regions of China following the installation of large-scale aquaculture basins in Xinjiang.
Despite the harsh, arid environment, the project has achieved impressive results. Fish production has reached nearly 196,500 tonnes, supported by an exceptional 99% survival rate. Even more notable is the system’s sustainability: over 90% of the water used is recycled, making the initiative both environmentally efficient and resource-conscious.
This breakthrough highlights China’s growing investment in innovative agricultural and aquaculture technologies, transforming previously unproductive desert land into a source of food production and economic activity.
The project is being viewed as a potential model for food security and sustainable aquaculture in water-scarce regions around the world.
